Yorkshire – Did you know…?
Historically named The Great North Road, this highway passes through the central north-south oriented lowland vale. It is the main route from London to Edinburgh. The other important north-south road is the A19, which runs along the eastern part of the central lowlands to serve Doncaster, Selby, York and Thirsk before going northwards to Teeside and thence to Tyneside. The M62 crosses the county from east to west linking Hull to the West Riding urban areas and thence to Manchester and Liverpool. The M1 from London terminates at Leeds after crossing the south of Yorkshire. The most northerly east west route id the A66 which runs from Scotch Corner on the A1(M) to join the M6 at Penrith. A number of major roads radiate from York. West and south Yorkshire are served by a complex network of routes that has evolved piecemeal over many centuries in response to the demands of trade and commerce.
